5 Wireless Routers for home security needs
The plan you have in your mind to set up a network of security cameras for your home is all laid out before you. You know what cameras you need to buy and you have a good idea where you want to place them. But before you do that, you need to establish a secure network. Now we are going talk about wireless routers for home security.
Router Security: Beware of Trolls
Without first establishing a secure network, you are going to leave yourself open for people, aka internet trolls, to take control over your cameras and use them for their own intentions. There are videos all over the internet showing people who are victimized by others who have obtained control their camera system.
So, what happens when you don’t take IP camera and router security seriously? Internet trolls can hack into your home and see whatever your camera sees. If your camera has a speaker, then they can speak through that as well.
We are talking about people speaking to kids through their nanny cameras and baby monitors. People monitoring former lovers, taking pictures of them, and posting them online. This is far beyond harassment. It is a physical psychological violation. Some people think it is funny, but it’s scary for those involved. You can read more about this strange phenomenon in our article about IP camera trolling.
We find this kind of thing extremely perverted and deeply disturbing. We post these images and videos only to show you what IP camera trollers will do if you don’t secure your camera properly. What’s below isn’t even the worst of it. These psychopathic, sadistic creeps even do this to sleeping babies.
Example of internet trolling
Anything with a wireless connection is open window through which someone can gain access to your system. This is an unavoidable fact of life these days. However, as mentioned in our security assessment plan, the idea is not to make hacking impossible – because that itself is impossible – but rather, to make as difficult as possible. People want easy targets, so making it harder for them, in most cases, will send them on their way to bother someone else. Your next step in home security is to find yourself a good router.
What is a router?
Your router is a major component of your security camera system. Basically, a router is the box that allows multiple computers and devices to connect to the same network. Today, most people are using wireless routers. Wireless routers allow all wifi enabled devices to connect to your network.
I want to again stress the importance of router security. Though wireless routers are not as secure as wired connections (the kind that requires you to plug-in to the box with an Ethernet cable), they can be almost as secure if you set it up correctly.
Router Security: Possible risks of wireless routers
- Sensitive information risks
- people stealing your passwords and login information for credit card and bank accounts
- Denial of Service
- people taking down your internet or taking over your computer
- Bandwidth Stealing
- people using your internet service for illegal downloading under your ISP account
- Internet Trolling
- people watching you and your family in your most private moments
Wireless routers for home security: router security features
Now, if you thought trying to find the right camera was a lot to take in, routers might sound even more complicated. There are hundreds of routers made from as many companies, all of which offer similar features and configurations. Router security is an important factor in home security. Most modern routers included two forms of encryption: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).
Like anything in the world of cyber security, old and outdated means open to attack. You see, once a system has been out for a while it becomes easier to hack. This is because cyber trolls have had enough time to figure out how to hack it. This is why you should stay up to date with both your equipment and its software and firmware.
Routers that only use WEP and WPA encryption fall into the category of old and outdated. Avoid getting those routers.
WPA2 is the most secure and offers the best protection for your wireless router. This will protect you from most hackers and again, serves as the first and best line of defense against a cyber threat.
Keep in mind, your biggest threat is strangers online trying to size control of your router. There is likely no James Bond spy agencies keeping tabs on you. All you need to do is make it slightly difficult for them and most will abandon their work against you, after all there are plenty of others out there left unsecured.
Recommended Security Setup for your wireless router
- Change your default login credentials
- Enable WPA2 encryption
- Enable your router’s firewall (if it comes with one, you’ll see the option on the router’s settings)
- Change the default SSID (Network service set identifier), i.e. your network name, to something unique
- Set your network category to private
- Limit your wireless coverage (also called radio power) if you have that option
- Always update your firmware
Other Considerations for choosing your wireless router
You need to consider the other uses of your router. For example, you might be using it for online gaming, movie or music steaming, downloading movies and music, or surfing the internet. Perhaps you work from home and need a fast network connection. What devices do you use? How many of them are connected at any given time?
When shopping for a wireless router, remember that each one of those connected devices can slow down your network speed, and consequently your cameras. So you want to make sure that you get the one that supports your all of your household requirements and not just your security needs. Typically you only need one router for your home, so let’s make sure we cover as many bases as possible.

Tenda Gigabit Wifi Router (AC18)
Speed matters for a lot of reasons. This router will serve two purposes. First, you can access your cameras. Second, you can access the internet via their connected devices.
In today’s modern world access to the internet is practically a necessity. It is our entertainment as well as our mode of communication. A slow router is frustrating for everyone.
Tenda makes an option that gives you speed, camera security, and a happier household. You get a connection speed of up to 1900Mbps, delivering both 1300Mbps at 5GHz and 600Mbps at 2.4 GHz at the same time. That is a considerable leap in speed when compared to the previous router and it does not cost all that much more. This will give you a lot more options on how you want to set your network up.
In terms of volume, we have seen anywhere from 10-20 devices connected to this router. Impressive!
However I would remiss if I did not point out that their customer service is not the best. So, view this as s temporary measure, and something you will want to replace within a year. Which by then new technology will be out and what was once more costly will be less expensive. Offering the security that you need to keep you and your family safe and sane.
- 11ac speed of up to 1900Mbps,
- 1300Mbps 802.11ac at 5GHz and 600Mbps 802.11n at 2.4 GHz

ASUS Dual-band Wireless-AC1900 Gigabit Router
Out of all of the brands in existence out there, and believe me there are A LOT, Asus stands out as one of the most reliable for router security.
This wireless router gives you not only the speed and reliability that you require you also get a 2 year warranty. Essentially the Tenda above is a good entry level router for its price, but the Asus gives you everything the Tenda gives you but with a lot more options for security. It also has built in its own processor, so basically it is its own little computer. What this means is the router is able to give boosts in power wherever power is needed, giving you a lot of options to play with, such as setting bandwidth or time limits.
Not to mention it comes with some powerful security features designed not only to protect you from hackers and criminals, but also protects you from viruses and malware. Viruses and Malware can be used to obtain personal information, including connection information, making you more vulnerable to attacks.
With the power to get you speed through your home and will help you be able to again, keep the family and yourself happy while giving your cameras the speed they need to send quality images to you no matter where you are. Reliable, fast, cost effective, and from a company that I personally have trusted for years. I am typing this right now, from an ASUS laptop. They make good items and you will see more of them. I love mine, and have personally no need for anything else. So this might be perfect for you.

ASUS AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless Gigabit Router
Now I have mentioned speed a lot. The reason speed is so important with your network has more to do with the clarity of picture for your cameras when broadcast to you while you are out and about. The more speed you have access to, the better quality of image you will get. This means you need the ability to have good and reliable speeds no matter who is doing what in your home.
The ASUS AC3200 gives you unprecedented speed., giving you 2600mbs connections on the two 5ghz bands and 600mbs connections on the 2.4ghz band. Part of this tri-band technology is the on board processor is able to move connected devices between the bands based on what will work the best at that particular time. This allocation keeps the speeds regulated to the highest possible performance.
So not only are you getting a lot of speed you are getting the same quality that is associated with ASUS including their really good and robust security systems. Including protection against Trojan Horses, Malware, Bloatware and also has good parental controls. Set time allotments, bandwidth allocations, and limit access to places on the internet you allow them to visit. The range is hard to beat, covering 3,000 square foot home is not a problem so this is ideal for those with larger homes and properties.
- Smart Connect auto-selects fastest band for all devices
- Built-in USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports for up to 10-times faster data transfers to USB storage devices1, printer sharing, and 3G/4G dongle support
- ASUSWRT graphical user interface for easy,
- 30-second setup and hassle-free advanced control
- Protection with Trend Micro with network security, parental controls and privacy protection
- ASUS AiCloud 2.0 lets you access, sync, share and stream your files anywhere
- AiProtection with Trend MicroTM for network security
ASUS AC5300 Tri-Band Wireless Gigabit Router
I am not sure if I have mentioned it or not, but I really like ASUS! They make a solid and reliable product. I cannot include a list of great routers and not include the absolute cream of the crop for routers, the ASUS AC5300.
I told you the routers would progressively get better and more costly and now we are at the peak. This router offers everything the 3200 offers with of course some noteworthy improvements. Its processor is much faster. It is able to balance the use of the bands a lot easier. And of course, all of the bands have better speed. With a combined rate of 5334 Mbps broadcasting all over your property covering up to 5,000 square feet, there is not many people that need much more than this for their home security and networking needs.
Of course with this comes all the same security features we know and require, and of course lots of options you can control and monitor. The router, having the ability to seamless transition devices between bands based on what will work best for them, will ensure the best possible data transfer between your cameras and smart devices.
Now most of us do not need this much speed and coverage. However if you can afford it, it would be a great value to your home security network. Not to mention it keeps the family gaming, streaming movies and music, and without slowing down your security network.
- Tri-band (dual 5 GHz, single 2.4 GHz) with the latest 802.11ac 4×4 technology for maximum throughput (5334 Mbps) and coverage (up to 5,000 sq. ft.)

Wireless Routers for Home Security: Final Thoughts on Router Security
There are a lot of routers and picking the one that works for you requires some thought. You need to not only know what your cameras require. You also need to consider everything else you will be using the router for. You also need secure networks so someone doesn’t wipe out your bank account or download something illegal in your name.
I’ve given you some good router options to chose from. They fit most budgets and requirements. However all my information and all the power and security in the world won’t keep you safe. You have to use them properly.
Most routers come with security settings tuned down or off. Learn how to turn on those features. Make sure they are working properly. It’s going to be an investment of time and money, but we are talking about your home security. Don’t cut corners were possible.
Remember to keep passwords secure. Limit who you let have access to them. And for Pete’s sake, don’t leave your router password on a sticky note on your computer. Make your personal security your personal responsibility. Good luck out there, be safe, and stay vigilant.
